About the Product In partnership with the Catholic University of America, Gale presents New Catholic Encyclopedia -- a 15-volume set and its yearly supplements, which focuses on relevant, high-interest areas of Catholic life.

The 2011 Supplement covers the areas of art, music and literature. It features over 340 signed, peer-reviewed articles written by specialists and scholars. In addition to the focus on the arts, it includes bios of those beatified and canonized since 2010, as well as entries on other relevant current Catholic issues, events and topics, such as: internet and the church, Pope Benedict XVI, popular culture, sex abuse crisis, television and Catholicism, women artists and Catholic art.

From Booklist:
The second edition of the New Catholic Encyclopedia was published in 2003, and in 2009, the publication of annual supplements commenced. More than just a vehicle for updating entries in the main set or documenting the ongoing life of the Catholic Church, the supplements are dedicated to a thematic area the editors believe is in need of greater coverage and expanded treatment. The theme for the 2011 supplement is literature and the arts. New entries include two surveys on cinema, namely, Film and Catholicism and Jesus (in Film). These overviews are enhanced with entries on specific filmmakers, such as Gibson, Mel and Scorsese, Martin, as well as a complementary survey, Television and Catholicism. The ritual use of dance is introduced in the entries entitled Liturgical dance and Liturgical dance movement. Coverage also extends to individual dancers and choreographers, such as Balanchine, George and Graham, Martha, and treats the Catholic or Christian themes explored in their work. The same holds true for the entries on author Joyce, James; composer Bernstein, Leonard; artist Warhol, Andy; and others. Finally, two other surveys worthy of mention are Music and Catholicism and Popular culture and Catholicism. Indexing and see also references in entries are a source of growing concern. The index included in the 2011 supplement is for those volumes only, not prior supplements or the main encyclopedia. The entry for Bach, Johann Sebastian includes a see also reference to an entry, Kyrie eleison, that is contained in the main set, not the 2011 supplement, though no indication of that fact is given. More attention needs to be paid to linking together content across these multiple print volumes. Since the supplements really don’t stand on their own, the 2011 set is recommended for libraries that have the second edition of the New Catholic Encyclopedia. --Christopher McConnell
