About the Author:

Jill Barklem was born in Epping in 1951. After an accident when she was thirteen, Jill was unable to take part in PE or games at school and instead developed her talent for drawing and art. On leaving school, she studied illustration at St Martin's in London before creating the enchanting world of Brambly Hedge.

When the stream by their house overflows its banks and floods their neighbors' home, young Wilfred and his mouse family invite the Voles to stay with them. The children play "Hide-and-Squeak" together, but little Sissy falls asleep in a basket boat, which drifts downstream. Wilfred and his friend Horace set off on their raft to find her. While this book lacks the cozy format of the original small volumes, it offers a good story, appealing watercolor artwork, and a certain bucolic charm reminiscent of Barklem's other books and even The Wind in the Willows. Recommended for children and adults who enjoy the comfortable sort of adventure story, feel the call of the English countryside, or just like the thought of messing about in boats. Carolyn Phelan
