ABBY KLEIN is a first-grade and kindergarten teacher. She and her husband and two children live in Vermont. They have four dogs.
Grade 1-2–This third installment in the series puts first-grader Freddy Thresher smack dab in a classroom quandary–how to get his schoolwork done on time. When Mrs. Wushy assigns an oral report about a nocturnal animal, the boy goes overboard with his research and ends up with a broken bone in the middle of the night. Alas, the cast on his arm isn't enough to postpone the due date, but his sister and best friend help him to pull through and complete his project. McKinley's illustrations exaggerate Freddy's predicaments and underscore the sometimes nasty personalities of his sister and a classmate. Their hostile intrusions spice up this otherwise bland but solid story.– Pat Leach, Lincoln City Libraries, NE
