1917. Sir Pelham Grenville (P. G.) Wodehouse, English humorist who wrote novels, short stories, plays, lyrics, and essays, all with the touch of gentle satire. He is best known as the creator of the irredeemably dim and unflaggingly affable Bertie Wooster and his invincible valet Jeeves, but Wodehouse also produced multivolume story cycles on Blandings Castle, Mr. Mulliner's extended family, Mike and Psmith, the Oldest Member, Uncle Fred, and the Drones Club. Contents: Bill the Bloodhound; Extricating Young Gussie; Wilton's Holiday; The Mixer-I; The Mixer-II; Crowned Heads; At Geisenheimer's; The Making of Mac's; One Touch of Nature; Black for Luck; The Romance of an Ugly Policeman; A Sea of Troubles and The Man with Two Left Feet. About the Author:

Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (1881-1975) was an English humorist who wrote novels, short stories, plays, poems, song lyrics, and numerous pieces of journalism. He was highly popular throughout a career that lasted more than seventy years, and his many writings continue to be widely read. He is best known for his novels and short stories of Bertie Wooster and his manservant Jeeves and for his settings of English upper-class society of the pre- and post-World War I era. He lived in several countries before settling in the United States after World War II. During the 1920s, he collaborated with Broadway legends like Cole Porter and George Gershwin on musicals and, in the 1930s, expanded his repertoire by writing for motion pictures. He was honored with a knighthood in 1975.

From AudioFile:
When this collection of novelettes was published in 1917, Wodehouse had already been in print for 15 years-yet he was still at the dawn of his prolific career. Elements that would catch fire in later works first appear here, most notably Jeeves the Butler and Bertie Wooster's formidable Aunt Agatha, "who had an eye like a man-eating fish." Frederick Davidson has read some of Wodehouse's longer works, but he's better here, mostly because the female characters are limited. He has an almost cynical British voice, yet his own good humor comes through as he nearly drawls the finer points of the comic narrative. D.W. (c) AudioFile, Portland, Maine
