In "Alzheimer's and Aunt Alice" (AaAA), Linda has written a refreshingly honest account of her experience as a caregiver to her husband's aunt. The "journey of discovery" begins when Linda and her husband receive a long-distance phone call from Mike's eighty-five-year-old aunt. After a severe fall, the request for help quickly changes into a desperate need for help. The assistance that the couple thought they were prepared to offer to Aunt Alice likewise changes from help into caregiving. Because of the unusual circumstances, Linda first becomes a long-distance caregiver to a relative she hardly knows; then the immediate caregiver; and then back to being the long- distance caregiver. Unprepared for the difficulty of the disease and unsupported by medical advice, Linda learns first-hand about most of the classic symptoms of Alzheimer's as well as the trauma of being a caregiver. While Linda conveys both her mistakes and her lessons learned, the events unfold like a mystery novel, keeping the reader in suspense as to what will happen next. AaAA is not only an unusual journey that focuses on the experience and the lessons learned about Alzheimer's disease, but it also focuses on the emotions of the caregiver. Because of Linda's honest account of her own anger, frustrations, and shortcomings, the book is an excellent avenue to foster communication between caregivers, the medical providers, and other family members.
