About the Author:
Jan Furst is a retired Naval Architect and Marine Engineer, living on Bowen Island, in British Columbia, Canada. Born in Oslo, Norway in 1913, and educated at the University of Danzig (now Gdansk) he worked in the Shipbuilding Industry in Norway for many years. After having emigrated to Canada with his family in 1962, he continued there, first as a Shipbuilder, then as a consultant to the offshore oil and marine industries In Canada, Indonesia, United States and Bahamas. He was a commissioner on the Royal Commission on the Ocean Ranger Disaster and now volunteers for marine related and other activities. He has an honorary doctorate from Memorial University of Newfoundland. He published “Kajakksport og Kajakkbygging”(Oslo, 1931), a treatise on the construction and use of kayaks. He has a life-long interest in Old Norse sagas and pre-Columbian North American history and culture. His special interest in this field led him to speculate on the mysterious disappearance of the Icelanders and Norwegians, who 500 years before Columbus had settled on Greenland, but abandoned their colonies less than 100 years before the “official” discovery of North America. This led him to write the semi historical novel “Thorfinn Thorhallson’s Saga”, which is a plausible account of what happened to them. Jan is still very active, writing short stories and poems, teaching fencing for a small group on Bowen, and is a member of the Toastmasters there. He has developed a system for amateur building of kayaks and small boats. One son, whose wife and two children live in BC, his other son; whose wife, one daughter and two grandchildren live in Ontario, his other daughter in BC. This year he is publishing his second novel: “Ultimate Downsizing”. It is a science fiction book, predicting the state of life on Planet Earth in the 23rd. century. His vision is based on extrapolation of present trends in technology, social structure and global economy, sprinkled with fantasy of development that may or may not happen.
