About the Author:
Michael G. Prais, PhD., has degrees in chemistry from the University of Chicago and the University of California, San Diego, and has extensive experience as a theoretician using mathematics to understand physical phenomena. He has been a tenured university faculty member teaching general, physical, and analytical chemistry. For the last 25 years, Dr. Prais has worked with faculty, students, and staff to understand and use modern information and communication technologies in their academic pursuits. When photographers were just beginning to digitize their images with scanners and cameras and then manipulate these images with information technologies, Dr. Prais decided to combine a long-time curiosity about photography and visual design with his interest supporting faculty and students in art and design and others across the university who wanted to use Photoshop. In learning about photography, he has thoroughly analyzed the calculations that go into the exposure process and has connected this process with a composition process. This analysis recognizes the similarities and the differences among solid-state (digital) cameras and emulsion (film) cameras and shows how these features influence exposure in the service of composition. Currently, Dr. Prais works at Saint Xavier University in Chicago as the Director of Information Services.
