Creating my first book, "Magni Modernism" was a journey celebrating 25 years of practice. During this period of digital publications, finding a publisher was not easy. To have Harry N. Abrams publish my book and then place it on the cover of their catalogue has been an exciting honor.
As a designer, most of our lives are involved in the design and construction of projects; in my case, Luxury Homes. We know little of the publishing world. So after designing multi-million homes from Moscow to Mexico City, I had a great deal to learn. Starting with Jill Cohen, my book agent in New York City to connecting with the writer, Marc Kristal, who can capture your voice and tell the exciting stories, to a graphic designer, Miko McGinty, that can lay out the pages in a logical and beautiful manner. And then after months and months and drafts and redrafts - the publisher Abrams assembles the book much like a conductor to an orchestra would do. Then you think it's finished - HA! Then the marketing, the speaking engagements, the book tours, the signings, and the travel begins!
So this 25 year journey is compiled into a beautiful, gorgeous manuscript and then the marathon begins. Every waking moment of every day for 2 years is expended into publishing and promoting your book.
It's an offering to the world of your life's work, in the hope that you have left your legacy.
The process of writing Magni Modernism was a reflection back on 25 years of "Blood, Sweat and Chairs" to quote Mayer Rus, West Coast editor of Architectural Digest.
For thirty years, celebrated designer James Magni has been creating dramatic interiors in private residences that inspire such descriptions as "cool splendor," "exquisite simplicity," and "sumptuous restraint." Called a "prophetic designer" by the New York Times, Magni is a modernist to his core, remaining true to that style's principles, while at the same time transforming it for a new generation. Originally trained as an architect, Magni has completed the interiors of some three hundred homes. Fourteen of his most memorable projects, in such diverse locales as Los Angeles, Mexico City, Jackson Hole, Aspen, and Moscow, are featured in this volume, the first retrospective of his work and a showcase for his new modernism-luxurious highly sophisticated living environments notable for their precise lines, open-plan spaces, spectacular views, and meticulously curated art collections. As these interiors reveal, Magni's commitment to quality and craft also embraces furniture design: his Magni Home Collection-Furnishings originally created for specific projects-now includes a wide array of exquisitely imagined and superbly executed pieces. The lavish photography of these magnificent homes is accompanied by a foreword from design writer Mayer Rus and a text by architecture writer and journalist Marc Kristal, who interviewed Magni extensively for this book. Magni Modernism brings Magni's elegant minimalism and refined opulence to a whole new audience.
