Bev Hanson began her career in Atlanta, Georgia in 1970 as a photo-journalist for a then-popular area magazine where she rose to an editorial position. From the magazine, she went into public relations and marketing. She was an 18-year veteran of Atlanta's marketing wars and video production when she moved to Florida. There, she established an advertising agency and spent eight years as its president and creative director.
Hanson then founded an upscale. regional, monthly magazine which she published and edited and to which she contributed a monthly column and occasional articles over the next eight years. After the magazine shut down in the summer of 2001, she turned to the thing she had always wanted to do, writing books.
"I'll never retire," she says. "I'm having way too much fun playing with my MAC and enjoying at last the luxury of writing what I want to write."
DIMENSIONS is her first published novel.
The following excerpt is taken from Chapter Seven of DIMENSIONS. Johnny and Carlos are discussing their new surroundings in the library garden.
Carlos threw a pebble into the basin of a fountain near them. A small, yellow bird flew down from a nearby tree branch and plucked the pebble from the water. It took off from the fountain and dropped the pebble in Carlos' lap. Then it hovered in front of him a moment while it chirruped indignantly before flying away. Carlos gave Johnny a sheepish look. "Oops," he said. "Guess that's a definite no-no. "I know what you mean about the scope. There are things in my Carlos life I haven't had the nerve to look at yet."
Johnny looked at his friend. "Who are you, Carlos? I mean, who are you really?"
"There's an easy way for you to find out, Johnny. Have you been to the Hall of Records?"
"No. Can't you just tell me?"
"It's better if you learn how to dig up this kind of information for yourself. Do you want to go to the Hall of Records?"
"Now?" Johnny asked. Carlos nodded. "Just like that?" Johnny asked again and Carlos nodded again and grinned at him. When he grinned like that, he looked more like the Carlos he was used to. Johnny looked around. "Where is it?"
Carlos grinned wider. "I don't know. It's just there, like everything else. You don't walk to it, you just go there."
"How?"
"I can get us there."
"Johnny shrugged. "Okay, let's do it." He had grown trustful by now of other people transporting him where he wanted to go. Without any hesitation at all, he extended his hand to Carlos. However, Carlos shook his head.
"Just stay close to me so your auric field and mine merge. I'll do the visualization and you will be pulled along with me if you want to go."
"I want to go."
"You're sure? Because if you don't, what will happen is I'll be there and you'll still be here."
"I want to go," Johnny repeated and watched in amazement as Carlos winked out. A moment later, he felt himself experience the transportation sensation. He looked around. No one was in sight--including Carlos. Johnny was no longer in the garden but he didn't appear to be in any Hall of Records either.
He was literally nowhere. All around him a white mist roiled. There was no landscape, no people, nothing. There seemed to be others in the vicinity, but no one he could see. A cold chill ran down his spine. "Carlos? he ventured timidly. "Carlos," he said a little louder. Nothing. He cleared his throat for a big, strong yell and froze with his mouth open. He heard something...naw, couldn't be.
Soon, he saw that something large was coming through the mist and he knew it wasn't his friend. Surprise swept over him then rapidly turned to disbelief. It was a horse. Slightly ahead, approaching him on the back of a beautiful pinto pony was a Native American Chief straight out of the old west. Now I know I'm dreaming, he thought and watched the Indian come close to him. His feathered headdress was of the ceremonial type that was sometimes worn in battle, but there was no war paint on his face. The horse stopped and the Chief nodded to him. Johnny stared. The Indian stared back. He didn't know how long this standoff would last, but he knew enough not to try to outstare an Indian, so he cleared his throat a little nervously and asked, "What is this place?"
The Indian looked mildy surprised and looked around before replying. "What are you doing here? There are not usually white faces in the land of the hunting grounds."
"Hunting grounds? Well, I can certainly understand that. But, you see, I was on my way to the Hall of Records and..."
"Hall of Records? There is no such place here. Only the land of my fathers.."
"But how do you get there?"
It is all around you. When the mist off the lake clears, you will see the valleys and the mountains. You will see the plains dark with buffalo, you..."
"No. I mean how do you get to the Hall of Records?"
"There is NO such place," the Indian repeated firmly. "These are the hunting grounds of the Narawa Comanche. We have no such place as this Hall of Records. Beyond the valley is the lodge of my Chieftain and father..."
"Look," Johnny said, "I don't mean to be rude, but how is it that you speak English so well?"
The Indian frowned. "What is English?"
"Right now you're talking to me in my language which is English. Did the Comanche speak English?"
The Chief shook his head. The feathers danced. "I have no knowledge of this English. We speak now in the tongue of the Narawa Comanche. You do speak the tongue of my fathers well. Where did you learn this?"
Johnny's exasperation was just beneath the surface. The Indian was obviously a basket case. "Do you have someone with you?" he asked hoping the Comanche's keeper was nearby.
The Indian looked puzzled. "Arando travel this hunt alone. Is anyone with you?"
Johnny wondered if Arando were asking for the same reason. This is getting nowhere he thought. He noticed the mist has thinned in one direction and he peered through it only to see several Native American lodges of the tepee type set up across the valley. Smoke curled from the tops of several. What the hell's going on, he thought. Even the library garden was better than this. He wished he were back there. Then he was.
