When people think of outlaws, they look westward. And although much of the focus here is on the Wild West and its system of law and order (or disorder), this book casts a wider net for bad guys of the 1800s: the gangs of New York, raiders in the Civil War, and American Indians fighting for their homeland. It’s not that there isn’t good information here—there is. Along with details about the law and outlaws, this utilizes original source material, everything from contemporaneous articles to the writings of Charles Dickens. The problem is the organization, or lack thereof. McIntosh starts out in the West, moves to a spread about a prison in the East, takes a look at the Texas Rangers, then begins a section on the Civil War. And although the format, with many photos and some accounts on a parchment design, does enliven the layout, there’s not much coherence in the look. The book includes several time lines, but they overlap and add to the confusion. This title in The Daily Life in America in the 1800s series is best used as a supplement to other material.
