Josh Lewis is also the author of Dumped!, a workbook for anyone who's ever been jilted. This is Josh's first book for young readers-aimed squarely at boys who still think girls are gross and slime is awesome. He lives in Brooklyn, New York.
Grade 2–4—Fern Goldberg and his pal Lester spend most of their time at Bert Lahr Elementary School trying to avoid Dirk Hamstone, the school bully, and his sidekick, Snort. A desperate Fern invents Super Chicken Nugget Boy, an imaginary crime fighter, and the friends wage a ninja attack on Dirk and Snort. The attack gets even weirder when Fern and his salamander, Arnie Simpson, fall in a vat of radioactive green goo and become real mutant superheroes. Fern's new skills as a crime fighter come in handy when the school is attacked by a giant French fry. This first in a series will surely delight many young readers. The story is lighthearted and full of adventure and fantasy, and the chicken-nugget hero will appeal to a variety of readers. The nod to Bert Lahr, the Wizard of Oz's Cowardly Lion, is a nice touch, as, just like that character, Fern goes from coward to superhero. The book is chock-full of comic-style illustrations demonstrating the heroes' prowess for fighting crime.—Jane Cronkhite, San Jose Public Library, CA
