There are three questions that I am asked more often than any others concerning the American Indian trade blankets. They are:
What is an American Indian trade blanket?
How did you start collecting these blankets?
How do you find these blankets?
The answers to these questions explain all the reasons why we wanted to collect the trade blankets.
What is an American Indian trade blanket? In the simplest terms, an American Indian trade blanket is a commercially created, machine-woven wearing blanket produced for an American Indian market. Even though the following pages tell the history of the trade blanket, it is important to state that, prior to the production of these blankets, the Indian people were able to provide warmth for themselves by relying on native or natural means. Historically, wearing robes were created from animal hides and fur, woven plant fibers, and, ultimately, fabric woven by hand from wool or cotton. With European contact and the introduction of trade goods, suddenly the need for these traditional forms of protective clothing was altered. The trade blanket replaced the hide robes and hand-woven blankets previously worn by native people. The development of a market for these blankets parallels the evolution of the Indian people's cultural existence.
