The author was born and raised in a small, Spanish speaking farming community near Espanola, New Mexico. She learned the traditional art of colcha embroidery from her mother, Maria Teofila Ortiz de Lujan, one of the founders of the Arte Antiguo club, a group of 12 women who sought to preserve the old Spanish traditions of New Mexico. In this book she provides detailed instructions for the colcha stitch, a type of couching stitch developed to decorate and add warmth to traditional woolen bed covers. The author describes what supplies are needed, how to transfer patterns, how to execute the colcha stitch, and how to use a needle and your imagination to create your own work of art. Also included are 15 new colcha patterns created by the author. Illustrated with black and white diagrams. Spiral bound, with glossy color covers.
