9781425950880: Albert & Jennie: A Civil War Story

Synopsis

Albert is an aging veteran of the Civil War who lives in a small rural town in Illinois. One day, while working for a local politician, Albert is accidentally injured. Once medical assistance is called for Albert is treated for her injuries. During that treatment an amazing discovery is made-Albert is a woman! This discovery leads to revelations that stun not only the few people who hear them but Albert herself. In the end questions arise about what to do next with Albert. Should her lifelong secret be kept or should the old soldier be shown for who she really is? But whatever happens, people are left wondering why did Albert do this & how was she never discovered earlier? Albert & Jennie tells the story of a singular Civil War soldier. Albert Cashier served with the 95th Illinois Volunteer Infantry for four years. What her comrades in arms did not realize was that Albert Cashier was really Jennie Hodgers, an Irish immigrant girl. In this novel the story of Albert Cashier's wartime experiences are told through a combination of fictional constructs and historical fact. Particular attention is paid to details of a Civil War soldier's existence as well as the narrative chain of Albert's life. Albert & Jennie is a work of historical fiction that also touches on themes related to friendship, loss, isolation, loneliness, and love.

About the Author

Greg Romaneck has been writing about the Civil War for over twenty years. In that time period Greg has authored dozens of articles about various aspects of the war with a primary focus on the daily life of common soldiers and civilians. Greg is a featured writer for three Civil War journals catering to living historians. He has also authored several books and booklets dealing with various subjects related to Civil War history. In his writing Greg has focused his attention on social history and, in particular, how the Civil War affected the course of people's lives. Out of this research came the concept for this work of Civil War historical fiction. In his spare time Greg enjoys backpacking, reading, films, and bicycling. Greg has a particular love for wilderness areas and hiking in Northwoods locations such as Isle Royale National Park in the midst of Lake Superior. He also participates in Civil War reenacting and has done so since 1992. Greg resides in DeKalb, Illinois with his wife and three children. He is a professional educator as well as an author. At present, Greg is working on several writing projects inclusive of poetry books dealing with the Civil War and wilderness themes, a leadership book drawn from Abraham Lincoln's writings, self-improvement tips, a Civil War novel, and a study of the memoirs of Civil War soldiers and civilians. Albert & Jennie: A Civil War Story is Greg's fourth publication with AuthorHouse.
