Hardcover. Condition: USED_ASNEW. No Jacket. Deluxe Edition. Very Large Book. Indian Nations of North America chronicles the remarkable story of the Native inhabitants of our continent, through history and modern day. The book presents the myriad cultures, languages, traditions, and perspectives in the words of highly accomplished authors who are leaders within their own Native communities. Every currently federally recognized tribal entity (at the time of publication) is included in this book. Though the title identifies the scope as North America, due to space limitations this book does not include indigenous communities south of the U.S. border. In addition to the comprehensive listing of all tribes in the appendix and a detailed map showing all federally recognized U.S. tribal lands, essays feature dynamic histories of selected tribes, while shorter essays tell the stories of tribes through the lens of their individual reservations. The degree of disruption to Indian homelands caused by westward migration cannot be overestimated. Before first contact, many tribal groups ranged across broad regions that their modern descendants would not recognize as home. Forced relocations often propelled tribes vast distances to reservations shared with other tribes, even those previously considered rivals or enemies. Though Indian communities themselves would not necessarily identify themselves by the regions outlined in the chapters of this book, for purposes of categorization, the tribes are included in the regions they currently inhabit. The text is written by eight Native authors (and one non-Native) representing the eight major geographical regions of North America. The short entries on a selection of modern federally recognized tribal lands are derived from Tiller's Guide to Indian Country: Economic Profiles of American Indian Reservations and used with permission of the author, Veronica Tiller (Jicarilla Apache).
