K-Gr 4—Early readers are invited to explore the rainforest and a few of its inhabitants in this book of brilliant color photographs and sparse text. Beginning with a vocabulary tree (not all-inclusive), the work then introduces the climate, animals, and activities of the rainforest in simple sentences and picture labels. Rainforest sounds and background music help to create a tropical mood. Joe Towne reads clearly and with enthusiasm, and he explains at the start that he will be voicing the text outside of pictures first, and the picture icons within the photos second. The book is read with and without page-turn signals. The amazing photographs invite exploration and will likely spark questions. VERDICT This quality read-along early reader will introduce children to much more than the sloths of the rain forest, and will encourage them to continue exploring with other books in the series.—Mary Ann Karre, Binghamton, NY
