Is Africa calling you?!
We teachers think about a lot of things in February, mostly Spring Break. But for me it's the time of year that I think about getting married. Only there's a small problem: I don't have a fiancée. And so for the past ten years I have spent February planning my summer trip overseas. . . to look for a wife.
When school ends in May I'm off to some exotic corner of the planet returning the day before school starts in the fall. My hitchhiking treks have taken me around the world, sleeping under bridges, in train stations, and on park benches! But go I must, for the thought of spending a summer in Phoenix. . . alone. . . is totally unacceptable. And rather than wait for Ms. Right to find me, and go nuts in the meantime, I go out into the world to find her.
This year's wife hunting safari will actually take me to the homeland of all safaris. . . Africa! Perfect plan, now I just need to find that cheap ticket.

"Alone in Africa" could easily have been titled, "Growing Up in Africa", because after spending 81 days in such a culturally different world, my life in America would never be the same. I went to Africa to search for a wife and to see the many tourist sights. Instead, I learned about me and returned a new person. The pyramids and the famous mountains are things, and can be seen in books. But to pay for a hotel room with your t-shirt, or to see someone put a knife to someone's throat because he smashed his loaf of bread, or to listen to Merle Haggard on top of Mt. Kenya, these are things that make my life in America richer. When the copy machine breaks, it's okay. When the shower leaks, it's okay. I've pushed busses out of lakes. I've slept with bedbugs the size of turtles. To be with people whose idea of planning for the future simply means making it through the day, I had no choice but to grow up in Africa!
Good luck trying to turn the nightlight off and put the book down!
Born in 1956, Steven Bursi, the son of a very Italian family, moved from Memphis, Tennessee to Arizona in 1976. He began teaching in 1979 and found that he loved the interactions with the students and the fact that it was the perfect profession for someone with a desire to travel. It paid decent money and provided three months of time off in the summer. By traveling on a shoestring budget, Steve found that he could leave the day after school let out in May and return the day before school started in August. After spending several summers hitchhiking through Europe, and North America, he decided to take on the difficult continent of Africa. The book, "Alone in Africa - A Wife Hunting Safari", contains 54 vignettes of his 81 day trek.
