Synopsis

Fox Running learned the hard way that the world was his enemy. As a boy, he lost his Northern Cheyenne home to a blood feud. The army scattered his people as it followed up Custer's attack with furious, lethal blows that smashed a village and slaughtered his family. Fox Running was soon caught in a tangled time where soldiers killed Indians one minute and showed kindness to their children the next. Being Cheyenne in a white world was not what he wanted, but the home he always dreamed of was lost and gone forever. On the wild edges of the frontier, he learned what it meant to be a criminal, and what it meant to show courage. Sent to an Indian school in the East to save his life, he refused to renounce who and what he was. Although one reform-minded woman sought to transform his life, the world refused to allow it, leading Fox Running to stage a daring escape to return to the Plains where he would live free or die. On a quest to fulfill a pledge to a dying friend, he learns how little he is welcome, and how fast he is with his guns. Soon, with newspaper men and others on the trail of the gunfighter they dubbed the Cheyenne Kid, he finds acceptance with his cousins the Lakota, until the world's hatred for an Indian who will not bow leads to tragedy ... and a showdown.

From the Inside Flap

FROM CHAPTER 1:

The late afternoon sun warmed Fox Running as he squinted westward across the flatlands from the peak of the flat-topped canyon wall. An unbidden grim smile emerged as he saw the riders.
By habit, the slightly built Northern Cheyenne warrior's hands rested on the butts of the two guns he wore at his hips, even though the men below were far out of range. He wanted to make sure they saw; they felt the challenge; they knew he was not afraid. Of them. Of death. Of anything.
The wind gusted; the north wind that foretold the hard nights to come when the creeks would freeze. His hair, finally long again as a warrior's hair should be, streamed out from the back of his neck and across his bare shoulders, pulling at his temples against the band he wore around his head to keep the hair from his eyes. The cloth was marked with the blood of someone who would be avenged. Soon.
He snorted derisively as he watched the riders crane their necks and stare. It had taken them long enough. Perhaps Tallridge's men needed an Indian tracker! He should apply for the job, he thought mirthlessly, as they slowly walked their horses near the edge of the rock-strewn slope. Six. Eight. Fifteen men. Three packhorses he could count. They were looking. Planning. Let them come.
