Gr. 4-7. Lots of short biographies of famous people, past and present, add interest to these upbeat titles in the Heinemann State Studies series, which focus on the population and culture of each state. California celebrates the ethnic diversity of a place where refugees and immigrants have found it easy to fit in ("even the largest ethnic group, people of European background, add up to less than one half of the total population"). There's also a section on people who work in the computer and movie industries. Ohio has a chapter on the many Native peoples who first lived there and on the history of the settlers who came later. Several chapters look in detail at Ohioans who became presidents, astronauts, inventors, and achievers in everything from the arts to sports. Both volumes include many color photographs of individuals and groups. The celebrity bios make a lively change from the usual costumes, festivals, and foods approach to culture. Each book has a glossary, a map, and a minimal bibliography. Hazel Rochman
