9781434405753: The Trail of the Lonesome Pine

Synopsis

The Trail of the Lonesome Pine is set in the Appalachian Mountains and examines a long-standing family feud between the Falins and the Tollivers, somewhat based on the life of "Devil John" Wesley Wright. The work examines the impact that industrialization and mining have had on the region, set behind a tale of romance and revenge. The Trail of the Lonesome Pine was a best-selling novel in both 1908 and 1909, and went on to several adaptations for the stage, and four times as a film, in 1914, 1916, 1923 and finally in 1936. The work was written by John Fox, Jr. (1862-1919) who worked as a reporter for the New York Times, the New York Sun, Scribner's and Harper's Weekly. He wrote a series of short stories, some becoming fairly successful like The Kentuckians (1898). Fox served as a war correspondent during the Spanish-American War and the Russo- Japanese War, but continued to write a variety of short stories. He also wrote longer fiction, and The Trail of the Lonesome Pine, along with The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come became his most popular works. He died of pneumonia in 1919, while living in Big Stone Gap, Virginia. His home was turned into a museum honoring his life and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

About the Author

John Fox Jr. (1863 1919), author of The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come and many other books, remains one of Kentucky best-known and most popular writers.

From AudioFile

Little June Tolliver changes her life forever the day she lies hides behind the big Lonesome Pine to observe a handsome visitor. That man, Jack Hale, becomes her champion as he transforms her from a backwater Appalachian waif to a high-society lady. But while her tastes and expectations change, her heart remains in the Cumberland Gap. This reading expertly presents more than two dozen male and female voices that include both tough, backcountry accents and cultured, Eastern inflections. Villers's pace is perfect for this potentially tedious tale; when it was over, I wanted a sequel immediately. J.E.G. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Set in the Appalachian Mountains, this classic American novel tells the story of Jack Hale, a young engineer who falls in love with June Tolliver, a mountain girl caught in the middle of a fierce family feud. As Jack brings modern industry to the isolated mountain community, he confronts deep-seated traditions, rivalries, and his growing love for June. The Trail of the Lonesome Pine blends romance, adventure, and social change, painting a vivid picture of life in rural Kentucky during the early 20th century. This is John Fox's best-known work. The American journalist was a well-known short-story writer and novelist; he also found fame as a war correspondent.
