Thomas Hughes (1822 - 1896), was a student at Rugby School and wrote this classic work in the mid-1800s. Hughes had earlier written a prequel (Tom Brown's Schooldays), and later became a Member of Parliament. Tom Brown at Oxford is a work of fiction but based greatly on the university experiences of the author, Thomas Hughes. Hughes’ schoolmates included William Arnold, the younger brother of the poet Matthew Arnold and son of Doctor Arnold; who wrote Oakfield, a novel about a young man who left university life at Oxford and enlisted in the British Army, serving in India. Oakfield is available as a Cameron Collectible from 2016, and readers who enjoy Victorian literature may also find it enjoyable and thought-provoking.
