Synopsis

  • Brian, Brad and Matt are best described as lovable perpetual losers. They're good guys who just lack direction and are all too happy to be enjoying that lazy time after high school. Their favorite thing to do in life is to play video games, eat junk food and kick around the suburban town they live in. All of this tranquil laziness is interrupted when Brian, Brad and Matt discover that the new girl Amber (of whom Matt is sweet on) is going to that night's big local rock show with Richard, the bully football jock. Determined to steer her away from Richard, the boys are launched off of their lazy rears and forced into a grand adventure. Chased by an irate football team, a vengeful troop of Girl Scouts and a stalking evil cat that may actually be possessed by Satan, our heroes are thrust into a giant rock 'n' roll videogame adventure.

About the Author

Matthew Loux grew up in rural Eastern Connecticut. Matt's first video game system was the trusty Atari 2600 acquired somehow by his brother Jesse. This began a life long enjoyment (obsession) in video games. At some point between gaming sessions, Matthew managed to go to school. He eventually graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York City where his focus was split between his Playstation and his N64. Matt currently draws comics in NYC. Occasionally, he sneaks in a game or two when his editor isn't looking.

Brian, Brad, & Matt are best described as lovable perpetual losers. They’re good guys who just lack direction and are all too happy to be enjoying that lazy time after high school. All of this tranquil laziness is interrupted when the three of them discover that the new girl Amber (of whom Matt is sweet on) is going to that night's big local rock show with Richard, the bully football jock. Determined to steer her away from Richard, the boys are launched off of their lazy rears and forced into a grand adventure.

Chased by an irate football team, a vengeful pack of girly scouts, and a stalking evil cat that may actually be possessed by Satan, our heroes are thrust into a giant rock’n’roll videogame adventure.

Reviews

This graphic novel about three teenage friends is enormous fun. Brian, the genius at video games, Brad the practical joker and the lovelorn Matt work to save their friend Amber from Dick, a bully with sexual issues. But the plot is almost beside the point—the banter among the three friends and the strange things the boys decide to do is so entertaining. "You've gotta figure, Frankenberry is pretty much Frankenstein, only pink," says Brian, as they deliberate the strengths of various breakfast cereal characters. Later, Brad liberates lobsters from a tank in a store, and Brian, who's held the high score at Street Fighter in the local arcade for years, is challenged by a Girl Scout, loses, then reneges on his promise to buy all her cookies and is beaten by eight-year-olds. The characters are drawn in thick, stylized lines—they have a '50s feel, but a thoroughly modern attitude, including lots of insider talk about video games, especially Prisoner of Zelda. "I always thought of Brad as Princess Toadstool," says Matt. The book is wholesome (an antidrinking message), but still entertaining for young teens or those with a sense of humor, even if they don't own a PlayStation. (Nov.)
