Robert Leland Smith and his twin brother Richard Arthur Smith were born and raised in a slum ghetto on Chicago's south-side. They witnessed the hardships during the economic Great Depression and the migrant flood of Negroes from the southern plantation during the Decades of Public Aid. They prepared themselves to face the many segregations and challenges of racial discrimination confronted by urban Negro minorities. R. Leland was Executive Director of Saint Leonard's Half-way House on the near West-Side of Chicago during the 1970's. This decade was the most challenging yet rewarding experience of his long career in human services. Throughout his life he has been seeking answers to "What makes them do that?" He found that each answered raised another questions. so his search for truth and meaning goes on. He began writing short stories to acknowledge the challenges faced by a marginalized minority group in American Society who remain in search of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Their persistence is strengthened in spite of, or because of the ongoing deceptive practices and hollow promises with which they must content.
