Reviews

Gr 1–5—The first of four books in this series provides readers with experiments related to sound using everyday objects found around the house. Through items such as paper tubes, balloons, water bottles, milk jugs, and spoons, and concepts that include sound waves, amplification, vibration, and the transmission of sound are demonstrated. A brief paragraph ("Why Does It Happen?") explains the results of each experiment. Though the projects are easy and accessible, some adult guidance would be helpful, especially for younger children. Reminiscent of old elementary school projects (a paper-cup-and-string telephone, cardboard tube rain stick), this book, with its soft but colorful illustrations and clear, step-by-step instructions, introduces a new generation to fun science experiments with a fresh approach. Enjoyable and inspiring.—Denise Moore, O'Gorman Junior High School, Sioux Falls, SD
