The eleven members of the Bradley family are clannishly close and solidly unified. At least they are until the oldest son, Thomas, breathes the name of Texas. When the family, in 1822, leaves the mountains of Kentucky for the wildness of what is northern Mexico, the matriarch, Elizabeth, climbs aboard the wagon nurturing a seething anger toward her son and her husband, Edward. In stonefaced silence, she feeds her bitterness mile after plodding mile. It takes her sister-in-law, Polly Boone Bradley, to make Elizabeth appreciate what she has rather than grieve for what she is losing. In time, as she sees her nine children thrive, Elizabeth comes to accept the raw new country, but it will be tragedy that finally gives her the heart of a Texan. When Letty, the headstrong seventh Bradley child, falls in love with her brother's partner, Brax Hall, and marries him, it seems a perfect union. And so it is in spite of Brax's older brother, Warren. Rich, educated and politically influential, Warren is also narcissistically self-absorbed. He allows nothing, nor anyone, to stand in the way of what he wants. A chain of events, triggered by Warren, forces Letty to leave her beloved family, and Texas, in order to protect her son. For seven years, she must call the Louisiana bayou country home, but, just as trouble forced her out of Texas, trouble gives her no choice but to return. Her fear begins as soon as she crosses the Sabine River, and it grows with each mile the wagon bumps east along the La Bahia Road.

About the Author:
Jacquelyn Thompson, a sixth generation Texan through both matriarchal and patriarchal lines, was born in Houston but grew up in the tiny town of Normangee, Texas. She attended the University of Texas and Sam Houston State University. In addition to having written a newspaper column for over a decade, as well as articles for other publications, she has won honors in both the manuscript and book divisions of the Texas State Genealogical Society's annual writing forum. Drawing on a natural ability for public speaking and a love of history, she gives oral presentations to groups and schools on early Texas and the Civil War often focusing on little-known people and events of the periods. The fabric of history is woven and interwoven with small stories of obscure people. To define them simply as warriors, adventurers or land seekers is to ignore the same emotions and aspects of their lives that permeate our own. Human nature remains a constant. There is no time frame or cultural identity that excludes the extremes of love and lust, greed and generosity, pain and exultation and absolute bravery in the face of abject fear. Letty Bradley, around whom Sabine Crossing revolves, is Jacquelyn Thompson's great-great grandmother. Using extensively researched actual events, court documents and family lore, she has pieced Letty's story, and that of all the Bradleys, into a rich historical quilt of life in early Texas and the inevitable loss that was a part of it. A branch administrator for G&K Services, an international corporation, Jacquelyn Thompson makes her home in Bryan, Texas.
