My name is Nikki, I am 26 years old and I am a Breast Cancer Survivor. The word "Cancer"...terrifying, death, hopelessness, fearful and sad. This was how the word Cancer made me feel being 23 years old and diagnosed with Breast Cancer. This word was all to familiar to me losing my mom to Cancer when I was 15, who would have thought after seeing her battle I would soon have one of my own. It’s hard to believe that something as terrifying as “Cancer” could actually change one of my core beliefs; a belief that this disease was only meant to cause pain and tragedy in one’s life. I now walk with hope and gratitude for all of the little things that I use to take for granted. I stand among the many courageous woman diagnosed with Breast Cancer every day. I wanted to share my story and the hope I found through my experience. Something real to laugh with or cry with and the little tricks I found that helped me cope with the symptoms that I experienced. This is my journey....

About the Author:
A NOTE ON THE AUTHOR Nicole Demke was born on February 17, 1982. She grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah with her three older brothers and one younger sister. Her parents divorced when she was three and shortly after her father moved temporarily to Texas for work. Nicole’s mother (Carla) embraced the role of a single parent responsible for five growing children needing every second of her time. Through the years her mother quickly became more than just a parent to her children, she was a friend and a wonderful teacher. Her mothers death at age 46 from colon cancer was an immensely difficult time in her family’s life. The heartbreak that came with losing her mom to cancer along with being diagnosed with breast cancer herself just eight years later inspired Nicole to write this book. Nicole has always loved telling stories. As a child, her first “Non-fiction story” was of thunder and rain storms, which were fascinating to this, young seven year old. Her family always knew where to find Nicole when the clouds started rolling in: “On the trampoline in the backyard staring up at the sky”, recalls her younger sister Alicia. She also loved to entertain her mother and siblings of funny made up stories of her day, which often times were believable until the punch lines nearing the end. She found joy in their reactions, which gave her the ambition to continue her story telling to a much larger audience. Nicole is working on a degree at Salt Lake Community College in writing with hopes to fulfill her dreams of becoming an Author of all different kinds of genres. Nicole’s passion and dedication to writing this book over the past three years has inspired her to work on her next project, creating a non-profit organization with her sister Alicia to help aid those going through a cancer crisis. Alicia, showing the big heart she has, organized a fund-raiser to help aid Nicole during her battle with cancer. What was raised through the generosity of friends, family and just concerned acquaintances was a giant help in relieving the financial stress that was added upon what was already a stressful situation. One less bill is one less worry. Not everyone has the support network needed to overcome the financial stress while fighting cancer. This fact has inspired Alicia and Nicole to try and make it possible to give those who need help a hand up. “Breast Cancer could have taken her life, but instead it strengthened the one she is blessed to be living”.
