Eight Inconsistent Consonants produce 50 sounds we call phonics, which are spelled in 60 ways we call spelling patterns. 1. The eight inconsistent consonants c, g, h, q, s, x, w, and y are dissected and isolated in a book that is a volume in the book Learn to Spell 500 Words a Day. All of the prefixes in 900 words are presented in the last chapter of the Consonants book. 2. The Consonants book contains 45 comprehensive and detailed phonics-based spelling lessons. Each lesson begins with a logical spelling rule, followed by a list of nearly all the words that follow that rule, and students are asked to read aloud slowly to memorize the spelling of hundreds of words at a time. 3. Every sound and spelling pattern of the eight inconsistent consonants is presented in this book and students are always informed beforehand of any inconsistency that is about to occur. Explore the following summary of what is in the book. 4. Sample Lesson: The letter K is in a limited number of words and it is not allowed in long words. From the Inside Flap:
The Spelling Patterns of the K Sound:
  1. K: As in kite, the k is in a limited number of words (approximately 40).
  2. Q: As in queen, the q sounds like k, and every q is followed by a u. Because the u is no longer a vowel, every qu must be followed by a vowel.
  3. X: As in tax and as in anxious, the x sounds like a ks or kc.
  4. C: The letter k is not allowed in long words and is very limited in its use. Thus, when you hear yourself saying the k sound in these 12 spelling patterns, spell it with a c:
  • cat, academy
  • cold, consonants
  • cup, accurate
  • club, conclude
  • crop, describe
  • fact, character
  • sick, fantastic
  • accident, back
  • sock, occupy
  • deck, eccentric
  • luck, chuckle
  • choir, chemistry
