David E. Newton holds a BA in chemistry, an MA in education from the University of Michigan, and an EdD in science education from Harvard University.
Gr 8 Up-This lucid, wide-ranging handbook on robot history and technology is accessible and absorbing. Relying on authoritative sourcing of documents, Newton covers relevant events and issues as well as the innovators and artists who have contributed to the development of robots. Occasional black-and-white photos are engaging. Nearly half the volume is given over to back matter, including an annotated bibliography and additional resource lists. While the index is somewhat weak, it will suit high schoolers sufficiently. In addition to being homework-ready, this work will attract readers teen through adult who are simply curious about what exactly robots are and how they can affect human work. VERDICT Recommended for school, public, and community college collections.-Francisca Goldsmith, Library Ronin, Worcester, MAα(c) Copyright 2011.
