When young artist Mina looks up at the cold winter sky, she is struck with an idea. And as she draws with her crayon, something magical begins. Her canvas expands to the snowy world beyond -- a world in which Mina uses her creativity to help others, forge new friendships, and make memories to warm the heart for seasons to come.

Hyeon-Ju Lee is a young author and illustrator from Korea who brims with talent. This is her debut childrens picture book, for which she garnered an Opera Prima Mention for the Bologna Ragazzi Award 2012, an honor given to new authors and illustrators for the ''best designed book'' worldwide.
PreS-Gr 1—In her debut picture book, Lee tells the story of a girl named Mina, who is looking to brighten her world on a cold and gray day. The child, with the help of her imagination and a crayon, begins to draw an adventure within a snowy, frozen forest. On her journey she meets all kinds of new friends. A few of those friends include a grandfather woodpecker stuck in a treetop, a bear who needs help getting out of his cave after hibernating all winter, a little frog in need of some warm socks, and a sad, lost bunny who blends into the snow. This is a cute and endearing tale reminiscent of Crockett Johnson's classic Harold and the Purple Crayon, though not quite as memorable. Illustrations are large and linear, done in soft, cool colors depicting the vivid, frigid landscape. VERDICT Young children will delight in all the fun Mina has with her friends. An additional purchase, best used one-on-one.—Megan McGinnis, Sachem Public Library, Holbrook, NY
