Anne Bland (pen name) is a healthcare professional with over 35 years in critical care in the hospital setting. In her profession, she is recognized nationally and internationally, with nearly 100 presentations and over 30 publications in nutrition support. The author's daughter edited the manuscript and provided insightful suggestions and clarity that enhanced the final publication. Breathe was written and self published within less than 5 months after her mother's death.
To add credibility to Breathe from a healthcare professional's perspective, the author has chosen to use her real name and credentials, Denise Baird Schwartz, MS, RD, FADA, CNSC. Royalty from Breathe is donated for the Millennium Development Goal #1 to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger in honor of the author's mother.
Nearly 10 years before her mother died, during the author's 5-year search for family history documentation to join the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), she located the final document. Anne Bland Atkinson Baird, the author's great-great-great grandmother, was orphaned as a child, unfortunately she did not receive her inheritance. It was not until Anne married and achieved the right to sue in a court of law, for her inheritance in the early 1800s, that proof of her family history was recorded for posterity and provided the last document to connect nine generations. The author used Anne Bland as her pen name to give her ancestor a name in literature as the author of a book. Names throughout Breathe were chosen to honor individuals and provide privacy for the actual person in the story, to respect the dignity of every human being.
