The Taymouth Hours is one of the most fascinating illuminated manuscripts of late medieval England, but the circumstances of its commission have remained elusive for more than a century. In this first comprehensive study of the Taymouth Hours, Kathryn A. Smith traces the manuscript’s origin to Philippa of Hainault, queen of Edward III, and Edward’s sister, the thirteen-year-old Eleanor of Woodstock.
Smith provides a detailed analysis of the manuscript’s program, particularly the relationships between its marginal imagery and the devotional texts these images border, and embeds the Taymouth Hours within the historical, political, religious, and artistic contexts of early fourteenth-century England and northern Europe. Generously illustrated, the book also comes with a digitized edition of the entire manuscript. This feature allows readers to examine high-quality images of each folio while following along with Smith’s text.

‘This study of a single manuscript contributes a great deal, in form as well as in content, to our understanding of ways in which late medieval devotional trends could be incarnated in objects that were, in so many ways, physical embodiments of spiritual actions.’
(Anne Rudolff Stanton The Medieval Review; April 2013)‘As enjoyable as it is erudite, this is a book that invites and repays through reading.... Smith offers a wide ranging dissuasion of contemporary politics, religion, literature, and art.’
(S. Panayotova The English Historical Review 27 November 2014)‘Marvelous analyses of the book’s multilayered imagery... No one scholar could plumb all the mysteries of the Taymouth Hours imagery, but Smith is a persuasive guide to the many ways that it provided open-ended fodder for fourteenth century Christian devotion – and for contemporary interpretation.’
(Adam Cohen Common Knowledge vol 21:01:2015)‘As enjoyable as it is erudite, this is a book that invites and repays thorough reading.’
