Emily Bolam trained at Brighton Art College and is a very successful illustrator of children's books. She lives and works in Brighton.
When Jogger the hamster escapes his cage, the ensuing flight from the resident house cat, Sour Puss, really brings the pain—for the cat. Drawn as a scruffy feline with a hungry look in her slitty eyes, Sour Puss comes off more as victim than villain as she crashes head first into furniture (twice!), a toilet seat, and a closing door while lunging after her skittering prey. Then, just as she is about to pounce, down swoops a human hand to rescue the cowering rodent. Sheesh. Designed with newly independent readers in mind, this features white space aplenty around the text, which is printed in short, well spaced lines. Bolam’s minimally detailed color illustrations follow the wild chase from a point of view that is just above floor level. The first U.S. appearance of a book published overseas in 2000, this helter-skelter romp will leave children rooting almost as much for the predator as for her prey—and on the lookout for more animal adventures in the Buffin Street series. Grades 1-3. --John Peters
