Written by Alister McGrath, one of Britain's most admired and insightful biblical scholars, the NIV Bible Handbook is designed to be read alongside the New International Version as a comprehensive guide to Scripture. McGrath's in-depth commentary is complemented by introductions to and outlines of every Bible book, explaining the authorship, context and purpose with which each book was written. The commentary is interspersed with over sixty feature articles addressing difficult questions arising from the Bible, such as, 'What does the Bible say about homosexuality?' and 'Did God really command all that killing?' A number of helpful maps and charts also aid appreciation of biblical narrative and history.

Alister McGrath is the Andreas Idreos Professor of Science and Religion at Oxford University, and Fellow of Harris Manchester College, Oxford. After initial academic work in the natural sciences, Alister turned to the study of theology and intellectual history, while occasionally becoming engaged in broader cultural debates about the rationality and relevance of the Christian faith. He is the author of many academic and theological works, as well as the bestselling The Dawkins Delusion and, most recently, his acclaimed C. S. Lewis - A Life.
Although McGrath is not in the narrow sense a biblical scholar, it [the handbook] well expresses its author's overriding concern to commend the faith of the Bible ... The application of 61 passages is discussed in blocks set off from the main text ... These comments could provide useful starting- points for group discussions ... The handbook includes three introductory articles, admirably clear maps and other readers' help. -- Rev. Dr. Paul Ellingworth The Methodist Recorder McGrath's handbook is more about the communication of his gigantic knowledge into accessible helpful ways. Birds Have Nests blog More in-depth teaching on the different books of the Bible. Woman Alive Provides a helpful introduction to, and outline of, each book. Woman Alive A rounded view of the history and culture of the Bible and its characters. Woman Alive The author also tackles difficult questions in 60 short feature articles interspersed throughout the commentary. Woman Alive The more I read this handbook, the more impressed I was... [It is] well laid out, making it easy to use. Although the commentaries are rather brief they are nonetheless interesting. Church of England Newspaper
