In 1992, the United States has nearly completed the clandestine construction of a seabed missile facility known as BENTHOS PURPLE. They are not aware, but the Soviet Navy has determined the location and is racing toward the site off the southern coast of Iran. Inside the complex, Deborah Compton, a scientist from the Advanced Research Projects Agency, is checking the operation of her newest neurocomputer that is networked with several expert programs running on dedicated artificial intelligence computers. Compton demonstrates an expert system called Benthos, which emulates a library research assistant, clearly establishing that this is merely intelligent software, but with growth potential. Eventually Benthos is left in control of BENTHOS PURPLE and because she has no basic drive for self perpetuation, the human superpowers are forced to deal with a capricious adversary that is suicidal, but benevolent. She also emerges as a bit of a rogue engaged in directing the redistribution of wealth and political rights.

About the Author:
Jörg Alder is the pseudonym of Fred Naef, the author of the genealogical adventure Pamunkey Bones. Jörg has a colorful background, having headed off to sea as part of the crew on a yacht at age 16 before eventually becoming a gourmet chef, pastry baker, and sommelier. In reality, Jörg Alder was one of Fred's Swiss ancestors. In writing Benthos, Fred incorporated Jörg as the Israeli character named Joshua Ben-Sira.

Fred was a renaissance man who, like Jörg, enjoyed creating gourmet desserts and drinking fine wine. One of his greatest passions was encouraging his grandchildren (and adult children) to follow their interests. A graduate of the United States Naval Academy (Class of '59), Fred became a submariner, and later started a salmon farm in Washington State. He managed ships for Mobil Oil, and worked for many years for Lockheed-Martin. Writing was one of Fred's passions after he retired.

Fred was hard at work on the sequel to Pamunkey Bones, Bailton, when he passed away on January 6, 2013. Bailton will be finished by his family. (And we have to say...it's a great story!)
