This entry in the four-volume The Civil War: Essential Histories series was originally published in England under the title The American Civil War: The War in the West, 1863–1865 (2003), and additional back matter has been added to this edition. The first section, which takes up more than half the book, is an overview of battles fought south of Virginia and mostly west of Atlanta. Detailed information about the skirmishes and large cast of generals is enhanced by colored maps and photos of the generals accompanied by short blocks of text. Although that section is aimed at Civil War scholars and those with an intense interest in the subject, the subsequent sections may interest the lay reader or one who is doing light research. The format is very academic, with small print and black-and-white illustrations. This would be of use in collections where there is an unusually high demand for the subject.
