About the Author:

Born in 1944 in the United States, Garuda received a doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Massachusetts (1970) and worked as a licensed psychologist for ten years. He first learned of the immense significance of breathing when he became a patient and student of Dr. Alexander Lowen in the early 1970's. In 1973 he received a powerful initiation from Guru Bawa Muhaiyaddeen, the great Sufi master from Sri Lanka. In 1978, he began a three-year course of LSD-assisted psychotherapy (see Stanislav Grof, M.D.) which culminated in a realization that all mental understandings (all points of view) are limitations. This realization left Garuda quite confused and six months later he gave up his professional life as a psychologist. In his own words, 'I felt terribly lost and in no shape to help anyone find anything, let alone themselves.' In 1982, Garuda met his mentor who had been given the name 'Sunyata' by Ramana Maharshi. He was a 92-year old, Danish-born mystic who spoke of silence as the language of the real and innerstanding*, not understanding, as the way to a great life. His time with Sunyata was followed by a 16-year period of wandering. Then, in 1998, he met and took Joan Reddish as a teacher. When they met, she did not allow him to speak but what she said to him had the profound effect of clearing up his confusion. He then realized exactly what he was in the world to do. His full awakening came in 2008 by the grace of Sri Satya Sai Baba. Garuda now lives in Northern Thailand where he writes and holds meditation retreats.
