Why do sons show behaviors so often like their fathers? Inheritance or environment? Nature or nurture? Atlanta, inspired by Samuel Butler's The Way of All Flesh, explores the childhood friends and influences who grow up during the Great Depression and World War II, the remarkable 20th century, have their own sons, and engage in the challenges of life - - -love, friendship, innovations and creativity, and lies, hypocrisy, crime and deception, and even redemption.

About the Author:
Various "ways of knowing" have shaped Hal Slavkin's journey to this first novel "Atlanta." From the objective domain of scientific inquiry to the subjective realm of imagination and invention, Slavkin has evolved as a dentist, developmental biologist, a scientist, an educator, and as a scientific and academic administrator. He is intrigued with social inheritance and Samuel Butler's awareness of Darwin and his analysis dring the Victorian Age. His scholarship resulted in many hundreds of peer-reviewed scientific papers and much of his effort has been summarized in his recently published book "Birth of a Discipline: Craniofacial Biology" (2012). In crafting "Atlanta" he has keenly observed the human condition, the genesis of conflicts, rare but possible resolution and suspense through his prism as a man, son, brother, father, husband and friend. With his wife Lois, they live in Marina Del Rey, California, enjoying their King Charles Cavalier Winnie and sailing.
