From Kirkus Indie Reviews A hopeful self-help-style memoir about overcoming molestation, rape and incest. A tasteful self-portrait that promotes dignity and eschews pity. Kirkus Review A Journey of survival & healing from incest. Rena was four years old when her nightmare began. For nearly two decades she was sexually abused, bullied and terrorized by a relative, eleven years her senior. Rena shouldered the weight of the abuse for years fearing if she uttered one word of her unspeakable secrets against him she would be the one blamed and perhaps cast out of the family. She also reveals sexual abuse at the hands of other family members and the rape she endured as an adult by a colleague. At the age of thirty-four she knew the only way to reclaim the life that was stolen from her was to seek out and receive professional counseling. His Puppet No More! is the courageous true story of how she triumphed over the years of horrendous victimization and control of her abusers. Years after the abuse stopped, Rena was stuck in a world of shame and self-abuse. It took fifty years after she was first violated, even after counseling, before she had a miraculous breakthrough and was finally able to say “No More!” Leaving the shame and self-abuse in the past, she is now reclaiming her life and living the extraordinary life of which she has always dream'nt. Now empowered to share her unspeakable secrets, it is Rena’s greatest desire to give other victims the courage to seek help, realize their self-worth and live their own extraordinary life.

A hopeful self-help-style memoir about overcoming molestation, rape and incest.
“I genuinely wanted to share my story and in doing so hoped it would help others find their path to healing,” writes Romano. She takes care to warn of the difficult content: She openly discusses molestation, rape, incest, pregnancy, abortions, drug use and suicide. Most affecting are the forced sexual encounters she suffered from the age of 4 through adulthood. Amid the descriptions are nuggets of eloquent honesty. “There were times when I became confused and wondered why I was left alone, untouched,” she remembers of her childhood after abuse began. Romano goes on to address her fear of beginning therapy and, since Dean used drugs to abuse her, the trepidation she felt in pursuing treatment with antidepressant medication. Poignant descriptions of crucifixes and a life-changing revelation at a stoplight are the most powerful passages in the book.
A tasteful self-portrait that promotes dignity and eschews pity.
