Synopsis

This book contains seven stories from the pen of F. Scott Fitzgerald. Some are better known than others but all exemplify his style and, as always, reveal as much of the age they were written as about the author himself. As well as his novels, Fitzgerald wrote a string of short stories - many for magazine publication. We have chosen the seven that we consider to be some of his best. They were also some of his favorites and he himself wrote an introduction to each of the stories. The stories were published in various places and times but were first published in a collection in 1922. These introductions give us a unique insight into his motivations and purpose for each story. He was the great chronicler of the Jazz age so let these beautifully evocative stories transport you back to that era. The stories in this volume are humerous, prophetic but most of all beautifully written.

About the Author

Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald (September 24, 1896 – December 21, 1940) was one of the greatest American authors. In fact he is regarded by many as one the greatest ever authors. He published only four novels but a myriad of short stories. He chronicled (and effectively defined) an age but his writing also transcended this to allow insights into humanity only found with the greatest of novelists.

From AudioFile

The title story in this collection is Fitzgerald's comic masterpiece, in which a baby is born at age 70 and proceeds through his life growing younger. Scott Brick narrates this marvelous story with enthusiasm, using a variety of subtle voices for the different characters. His reading highlights the astonishing aspects of this situation, as well as the underlying humor of the tale. In "Babylon Revisited," Ray Porter's understated reading expresses the nostalgia and regret of Charlie Wales, who returns to Paris after the onset of the Depression and reflects on the way he lived and flaunted his wealth in his halcyon days. Three other stories, "The Lost Decade," "Three Hours Between Planes," and "The Bridal Party," round out this sample of Fitzgerald's short fiction.
