That wild and crazy guy of the 17th century - Samuel Pepys - continues his escapades in London and environs. Clearly, 1663 is a very busy year! In this volume: the King's notorious affair with Lady Castlemaine, worries about his own wife's fidelity, money troubles, an insider's look at British politics, scientific wonders, health issues, and, of course, general carousing! Much too scandalous to be published in its own time, this first person account sheds an entirely different light on Pepys' times. The year begins with the King's dalliance: Among other discourse, Mrs. Sarah tells us how the King sups at least four or [five] times every week with my Lady Castlemaine; and most often stays till the morning with her, and goes home through the garden all alone privately, and that so as the very centrys take notice of it and speak of it.

About the Author
Robert Latham was Pepys Librarian at Magdalene College, Cambridge. In addition to editing the eleven volumes of The Diary of Samuel Pepys, he was the editor of the acclaimed Shorter Pepys (1985) and A Pepys Anthology (1988), both published by University of California Press. William Matthews was Professor of English at the University of California, Los Angeles.
