About the Author

Gwen Diehn has exhibited her artwork internationally and worked in many private and public collections, including the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington. She has taught college art as well as workshops for many years and is the author of several other Lark books, including The Decorated Page, The Decorated Journal, and The Complete Decorated Journal. Her Live & Learn: Real Life Journals (Lark) was listed as one of the top ten crafts books of 2010 by Booklist. Gwen lives in Swanannoa, NC.

*Starred Review* Despite the proliferation and popularity of e-books, it’s good to know that handmade books—journals that support a passion or avocation or collection of insights—are still in vogue. What three-time author Diehn (previous works are The Decorated Page, 2002; The Decorated Journal, 2006) has accomplished is that oh-so-important reader inspiration, which will lead to the “I can do this” conviction. She teaches us how, instead of buying ready-fashioned blank books, to create the one most suited to our needs through both a series of questions (e.g., Need a place to carry writing and drawing equipment? Should the binding be able to accommodate extra pages or other flat elements?) and eight different personal journals, each revealing different goals and uses. Especially savvy is the actual design of her how-to, colored and illustrated professionally to resemble a journal. Even the instructions for 10 covers, 16 books, and other techniques are lovingly explained in a combination of line drawings, words, and color examples.
