The American Museum of Natural History in New York City is one of the largest and most respected museums in the world. Since the Museum was founded in 1869, its collections have grown to include more than 33 million specimens and artifacts relating to the natural world and human cultures. The Museum showcases its collections in the exhibit halls and, behind the scenes, more than 200 scientists carry out cutting-edge research. It is also home to the Hayden Planetarium, which enjoys a proud legacy that has blended scientific scholarship with innovative public outreach for much of the past century. Approximately five million people from around the world visit the Museum each year. Plan a trip to the Museum, home of the world's largest collection of dinosaur fossils, or visit online at amnh.org.
PreS-Gr 2—Readers follow a litter of wolf pups as they mature. Growth is often measured in milestones; the pups initially rely on mother's milk, then graduate to eating regurgitated meat. By the end, the wolves are hunting alone for small animals. The function of wolf packs is discussed, including how adult wolves other than the pups' parents often help care for the young. Communication (the pups howl when separated from the pack) and physical development are also addressed. Made in conjunction with the American Museum of Natural History, the book contains large, gorgeous photographs that pair well with the text (e.g., a picture of nursing pups accompanies information about their reliance on mother's milk). The narrative is clear and easy to read, and there aren't any overly advanced vocabulary words or higher level concepts to stumble over. The only background knowledge required is an understanding that wolves are predators that need to hunt prey. Text is neatly laid out on pastel-colored boxes. VERDICT An appealing title that will delight young animal lovers. Recommended for most juvenile nonfiction collections.—Sara White, Seminole County Public Library, Casselberry, FL
