What’s got sharp teeth and scaly skin and is blue all over? Not Alligator Slim! All of the critters of the swamp can’t believe their ears―Alligator Slim is putting down the blues and picking up jazz. He says he’s sick and tired of singing sad songs in the swamp, so he’s putting on his hat, packing up his sax, and headin’ to the big city. What lies in store for him? Where will he live? Where will he play? He’s a gator out of water! He’s lucky to land a great gig, and the crowds are diggin’ his vibe and lovin’ his jive. But it doesn’t take long for Slim to learn that when you toot your own horn, it may rub a few jazz cats, or weasels, the wrong way. With a text that flows like the lyrics to a great song, and lush, atmospheric illustrations that bring the characters to life, young readers will get their kicks following Slim’s tale of change, struggle, and forgiveness.
A lover a jazz music and great hats, Samuel E. Pittman II teaches English language arts at a Texas middle school. He also coaches track and field, so he knows a thing or two about struggle. Pittman earned a BA in English with a minor in coaching from Texas A&M. He lives in College Station, Texas and spends his free time listening to music, reading and writing, and gardening―where he’s sure to keep an eye out for any weaselly rodents.
