About the Author:

Pat comes from an Alaska ­pioneer family. Her Grandfather Robert Geis was at St. Michael, Territory of Alaska, in 1897 and Circle City, Territory of Alaska in 1898 during the gold rush. Her great-grandfather Joseph Dahl was at Skagway and Circle City in 1898. He died on the S.S. Islander that was returning with gold miners to Seattle in 1901. The Islander hit an iceberg and sank. Minnie, his eldest daughter, came to Circle City to settle her father's estate. While there she met and ­married Robert Geis, who was in the saloon and hotel business. They came into Fairbanks in June 1903 and set up the first bar in the new town. Their daughter, Dorothy was born in Fairbanks and married Ray Wrede in 1939. Pat was born in Seattle, Washington in 1941, coming to Fairbanks at the age of 1.5 years. She graduated from the University of Alaska in Fairbanks in 1964 with a Bachelor of Arts in zoology and minors in art and anthropology. Pat is a life member of the Pioneers of Alaska Igloo No. 8 and will serve as President in 2011. She is Past-President of the Fairbanks Branch of the American Association of University Women; past Board of Director for the Girl Scouts; presently on the Board of Directors of the National Garden Clubs and the Alaska Humanities Forum and is a member of P.E.O. She was on the Fairbanks Ski Patrol and served as Ski Patrol Leader for a season. Pat has been employed at the University of Alaska ­Fairbanks as a Laboratory Technician, Technical Secretary/Desktop Publisher and as an Administrative Assistant in personnel/payroll for the Arctic Region Supercomputing Center until her retirement. Showing her love of the family tradition of gold mining in the Circle District, she received a Professional Prospector certification from the University of Alaska's Mining Extension. As an artist in the mediums of watercolors and oil, she has done posters for the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival and the Fairbanks Counseling and Adoption. She has taught drawing and painting flowers for the University of Alaska's Bristol Bay campus. She wrote "Gardening in the Cabbage Patch" in Fairbanks, Alaska, a gardening column for the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner and co-authored with Diane Shaw, a cultural, historical and geographical cookbook called ­"Cooking in Alaska: the Land of the Midnight Sun."
