Saint Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) was a priest of the Dominican order and is known as the Doctor Angelicus ("the Angelic Doctor"). His influence on Western thought is considerable, and much of modern philosophy was conceived in response to his ideas, particularly in the areas of ethics, natural law, and political theory. The works for which he is best known are the Summa Theologica and the Summa Contra Gentiles. One of the thirty-three Doctors of the Church, St. Thomas Aquinas is considered the Church's greatest theologian and philosopher.
