About the Author:
James Campbell, M.D. was born in Beardstown, Illinois to farming parents. In his youth his father taught him how to train dogs and horses, and how to see the practical side of problem solving. He graduated co-valedictorian from Warsaw High School; then he attended MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Ill. for three years before being accepted to St. Louis Univ. Medical School. He then went to Michael Reese in Chicago for one year of a medical internship and his basic three year adult psychiatric residency training. In 1971, after two years in the Air Force, he set up a private practice in Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Campbell became interested in being a doctor who would work with the mind when he was five years old. This interest was sparked by the adoration his mother and father shared for his meta-physician grandfather. His only disciplinary action in college followed hypnotizing two out of three of his roommates on a dare. In 1980 he completed a 2 year child fellowship at UCLA which added the treatment of children to his practice. Because he had treated adults for nearly 10 years before studying child psychology in depth, he started looking for and finding a variety of belief systems occurring in childhood that he came to believe were direct causes of adult psychopathology. He also discovered that he could teach many of the ideas in this book to his patients with good results. Because of that success, he took a chance and started teaching patients more concepts. The result was that improvements were even quicker. Many of these ideas evolved over the years to be seen as just making good sense in taking care of day to day issues. Because a lot of therapists and counselors did not seem to be in possession of the concepts, it had to be assumed that their education, like his, had not addressed these issues. The positive reception by most of his patients and their families encouraged him to undertake the writing of this book
