Life in the Academic Fast Lane
Martin Quint, Professor of Electrical Engineering at the Cambridge Technology Institute, is at the top of his professional career. Beloved as a teacher and internationally lionized as a researcher, he enthusiastically embraces his academic overload. But with a baby on the way, a voyeuristic computer specialist posting things in public that shouldn't be, and a critical tenure case for a junior female colleague hanging by a thread, life throws more at Martin than he can juggle.

Yes, I've published books before: three textbooks on highly technical subjects. But this is my first novel.
To develop elements of the material, I took my 36 years of experience on the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, chopped it all into bite-sized bits, tossed the bits in the air and, once they had landed, selected the choicest elements for assembly into this story. There are no real people in the book, but most of the events that turn up in One Man's Purpose have their roots in reality.
I started writing in earnest in January of 2014, using as starting material a short story I had written some years earlier that introduced a version of Martin Quint. The Martin Quint of that story was not a very nice person, and one of my goals in One Man's Purpose was to humanize him, making him more pleasant to be around, and to focus on issues of relationships, both professional and familial. I finished the manuscript in April 2015, worked with an editor to clean it up (thanks, editor!!), and released it to production in late summer 2015.
I am now assembling ideas for a sequel.
Stephen D. Senturia spent 36 years as a Professor of Electrical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is the author of three prominent textbooks and several hundred scientific papers. Here, in his first novel, he tells the story of a first-class university, full of smart, competent people, where things can still go badly wrong.
