From the Author:
Both stories in the book INDIVIDUAL deal with contemporary matters with an edge to them. A DEBT OWED confronts the handling of an overload of mustangs on crowded ground. There are no easy answers to the mustang problem; however, Del Winter, the main character in A DEBT OWED, has some answers for concerned citizens. Humans have confined the wild horses to the point that their graze is replaced by summer cabins, vegetable gardens, meadows fenced with barbed wire and cattle guards, all of which endanger the horses' lives.
THE SUM OF MUCH tangles prejudice with home-town perceptions, education collides with natural instinct, and one man, scarred and weary, confronts those in a position of power who would destroy a small and important piece of ignored swamp.
Both stories are based on fact; both stories are strong and A DEBT OWED will challenge a horse love to keep reading; the facts need to be remembered and understood if we are to make any positive changes to the treatment of our wild heritage.
About the Author:
William A. Luckey grew up in New England, and grew up with horses. A riding instructor at 18, the first student was a blind girl; she learned to ride on a Western mustang. Since then, Luckey has retrained spoiled horses, continues to teach riding, fox-hunted, evented, worked cattle - anything to do with horses. All of Luckey's books are based on strong characters, and in many, the horses are as much the heroes, and villains, as the humans. The western stories are not of cattle rustlers or gunslingers, but the tales, both traditional and contemporary, deal with moral struggles, facing fears; the stories are human, in the contemporary tales, there is sexual activity, as well as growth, failures, and change. Luckey sees these non-traditional attitudes as part of all our lives, and sixty years of working with horses and humans has given Luckey insights into all types of behavior. College-educated, with an English professor in the family. Luckey writes from the strength of experience and empathy.
