Synopsis

Trina Lacy knew all about survival. Since her accident, she has been determined never to feel like a victim, but live life as a survivor. Her classmate, Mark Jacobs did not think he deserved to be a survivor. Plagued by guilt for his role in his parent’s death, he felt life was not so great. Trina’s ex-boyfriend Lucas James felt guilty for the accident he caused that left his former girlfriend scarred. When Trina proposes a fundraiser to be held at Windows on the World for their community service project Lucas and Mark jump at the chance to help. Each of them has their own reasons. Once in the Towers, they decide to divide and conquer. They had not expected someone to fly planes into the Towers. They never expected to face escaping the burning towers with all the odds stacked against them. Now the fears they have been carrying with them must be dealt with as they take steps to get out. The question is, will they survive the events of 9/11?

As a teacher I've always had my students write.  It was one particular writing assignment for a reading class that actually set me on the path to writing my first book.  After walking my students through the process of developing characters, setting, and plot for their story, one of them asked me a most important question. "Since you are always making us read books and you are always making us write stories, why don't you just write books for your shelves so we can read the things we like?"  I had been saying since 9/11 that one day I would write a book.  That student statement and my husband handing me a note pad and telling me to get started set me on my path.  Getting the initial story down was easy.  Doing the research to make sure details in my story were accurate was enjoyable, challenging, and sometimes painful.  A friend of mine once said that writing and publishing that first book is often like giving birth, painful yet at the same time a joy.  This has been a learning process all around and one I have enjoyed.  It has set me on a path that I will continue down, because it is something that I am really enjoying.  If I can get my students to read along the way and maybe provide them with information they might not have known, then that is an added bonus.

About the Author

Sandra Stiles is a National Board Certified middle school teacher by day, and a writer and book reviewer by night. Steps to Courage is her first book inspired by events in her classroom on 9/11. She was encouraged to write books for her reluctant readers by some of her students. She lives in Florida with her husband, her mother, and her cat who rules supreme. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, painting, quilting, and taking quiet walks along the beach.
