THIS IS A BOOK ABOUT SUCCESS AGAINST GREAT ODDS.

Dr. Samuel M. Murray, the author, was born on a small farm in Yemassee, South Carolina. He was the youngest of ten children born to the late Moses and Nancy Murray. His father died at age 42, when the author was only one year old. At age eight, the author collected and returned deposit bottles in an effort to buy a pair of shoes to wear to school. Unfortunately, he couldn't find enough bottles. He then tried to pick and sell potatoes that were left in a field after the farmer was through harvesting, but he was chased out of the field. After failing each time he attempted to earn money for shoes and clothing, he decided to attend school barefoot. Dr. Murray started kindergarten at age nine, and attended school barefoot during the next three years. At age 12, he earned enough money to buy a used pair of shoes which cost $1.50. The author became an orphan in 1943, and moved to New York in 1944. He was later tutored in preparation for high school.

Dr. Murray and the former Eugenie Lewis were married on December 19, 1948. One month later, Eugenie Lewis Murray watched with pride as her husband received his high school diploma at age twenty. Since then, Dr. Murray has earned the following degrees: B.A., M.S., P.D., and Ed.D. At Fordham University, the author became a member of KAPPA DELTA PI (an honor society in education) in 1975, and was accepted as a member of PHI DELTA KAPPA (a professional fraternity in education) in 1976.

Dr. Murray had a successful career with the New York City Fire Department from 1958 to 1990. Before he became an author and publisher, Dr. Murray taught at William Paterson College in New Jersey, and at Nyack College in New York. Dr. Murray is an effective lecturer. He is particularly concerned about educational matters.
